Climasaga, a game about philanthropy and planet
Challenge
With the looming threat of climate change, only 2% of the world's philanthropy goes to solving this crisis. Therefore, Active Philanthropy asked our help to come up with a solution to motivate their clients in giving to the climate cause. Our focus was on individual European philanthropists, who work with non-profit organizations such as Active Philanthropy, when making their choice to give.

Research
How can Strategic Design support Active Philanthropy in motivating individuals to fund climate change?
Methodology
Desk Research
User/Expert Interviews
Survey
Cultural Probe

In addition to interviewing donors and experts, we also sent out a survey and received 60 responses. To gain more qualitative insights on the topic, we designed a VIP themed Cultural Probe for 6 individual donors to fill out.
Insights

People are more drawn towards imagery of people who are being affected by climate change of developing nation as opposed to developed nation.

Donors are willing to fund climate change projects, but they find it hard to understand the connection between
climate change and children/education.

Donors often perceive climate projects as high investment which makes it intimidating for them to start.

Prototyping
Service blueprint

With every prototype, we were able to test and iterate according to the feedback given by our participants.
Analogue Prototype
It's a role playing card game in a world with scarce resources, which forces players to make tough decisions on who to save.
Tools
Adobe Illustrator
iMovie (for videos)

5 Character cards
We created 4 characters from the Global South and 1 character from the Global North to give comparison when making the decision.

Asset cards
Each character hold a set of assets, in which they will lose if not saved from the disaster.

8 Disaster cards
Each round, the players will need to flip 1 out of 8 Disaster cards to see how they will be affected.

10 Enable cards
There are 9 Enable cards, which are used after a disaster hits and players can pick who they want to use it on.

Health bar
Some of the disasters affect health of the characters, and so the bar helps to track. If the health goes to 0 the character dies.

Digital Prototype
The app serves as an interactive platform, where all the videos are saved, and allows seamless scanning between cards and the app.
Tools
Figma
Protopie

Before the game
Onboarding
Each player are sent a character with an invitation to download the app.

During the game
Scan the card
When someone flips over a Disaster Card, players must scan the card to find out how it affects their character.

During the game
Watch videos
Players get to watch how the disaster affects them and have to make a decision on who to save.

After the game
Follow up
A week later, Active Philanthropy will follow up with the players on their philanthropy project choice.
